HivePoll: Glock 30 or Glock 36?

I have a G26 which is one of my carry pieces and I like it a lot. Small, light, and uber-handy. I tend to carry it more often than my 1911. So I was thinking (uh oh...), "why not get another Glock only in .45 ACP?" But which of these two to get: the G30, or the G36?

I'm in no hurry to make a new firearm purchase, mind you, but figured I'd go ahead and ask anyway while I debate these two in my melon. Whaddya' think?

Tick tock. (I'm oiling my G22 while I wait.)

Re: HivePoll: Glock 30 or Glock 36?

I like the G30 more then the G36. The G36 grip feels awkard to me. If you can, go shoot both of them. Putting rounds down range will give you the best answer. Glock's are great fighting pistols. Doing a level III malfunction is simple with most glocks. All you have to do is hold the mag release down while racking the slide and the mag will fall out. With most guns you need to lock the slide back and strip the mag and then do the rack of the slide three times.

Re: HivePoll: Glock 30 or Glock 36?

Tough call...I own both. I prefer the G36 for light summer concealed carry IWB and the G30 for carry OWB and most other times--bedside, travel, and general plinking and target practice.

Both are excellent, reliable, accurate shooters. The G30s fatter grip softens hot loads easier (200gr +P handloads) and the G36 is a little more of a handful with the skinnier grip, but still quite controllable.

I love my G30SF.

But I carry my G33.

Short frame? It has a bit of a smaller grip, but still takes standard G30 mags. Here is a comparison of the G21 and G21SF

Say, how does a guy get one of those Glocks with the olive drab frame? Do G30s come like that, ever?

Hey SC-

I've been playing w/ different loads for mine... Started w/ 230 grain Hydroshoks and after reading about poor penetration issues out of the short bbl on the G30, I switched to Hornady 200 GR +P.

I just picked up some 230 GR +P's -
Is that a good idea? Bad idea? worth it?

Also... I've got some lil "school teacher" hands.. Not very big at all.
I've never been able to figure out why people w/ small hands dislike the grip. I think its perfect.... however I'm well aware that its all preference.

Pardon me for going off track HIVE.:s1:

I have fairly large hands, but the short frame model is nuch more comfortable for me.

It's all preference I guess.

Btw, I got the G33 in Olive Drab.:emotions16:

G30 for me. SF stands for Short Frame.

One thing I realy like about the G30 that no one mentioned yet is the ability to take the 13 round magazines from the bigger gun (G21). I can buy one type of mag for both. You get a sleeve you put over them so the grip is still good.

My choice? Glock 36.

It's almost become a part of my anatomy over the past few years. I'm either wearing it, or I can reach it from where I am. Unless I'm in the shower :bath:(Just thought of that "exception")

It's just personal preference. Buy what you like and will carry. A nice big gun in your nightstand is pretty much useless when you're not home...

The 45 ACP is not exactly famous for deep penetration, so a 230+P may help. As far as hollow points go, 1000 fps or better seems to be the magic number for expansion. My preference is for 200 JHP +P and I handload Hornady 200 XTPs over 10.0 grains of Accurate #5 for good +P load...otherwise go with Speer Gold Dot 200 +P factory.

Having returned from my OBE I have to ask, what the heck is up with glock numbering? Is it just sequential or is there a system? The numbers mean jack to me.

Model numbers and serial numbers follow sequentially...

Glock Patents: (model)17, 18, 19, 20, 21, etc,

Serial numbers: AAA001, AAA002, AAA003........ZZZ999, etc.

So, the numbers are completely useless to someone who doesn't memorize the Glock timeline, nice.

Re: HivePoll: Glock 30 or Glock 36?

Okay, I looked there and what I gathered was that a whole lot of people are going through a whole lot of effort to catalog and sort out the confusion that is glock numbering.
I know it seems pedantic but it is really frustrating to be in a conversation surrounding glocks and everyone is throwing around model numbers as if I am supposed to know by a damned 2-digit nonsensical number all the specs of the weapon. FFS, I can't even tell you the caliber based on that info much less anything else. I mean, the system works if there are a grand total of 10 models or some limiting factor like that. Or if models starting with the #1=9mm, #2=40cal, #3=45acp, etc. As it is you need an external reference or a glock-lover's memory to keep up with it.

Ah, well, ranting won't solve anything, I just can't understand why everyone assumes even gun-nuts know what the numbers mean.

Thanks for the list, SilverCity.
Any idea why the .380 isn't available to the US?
I might have bought one of those if I'd had the chance prior to having a glock 45acp explode in my hand putting me off of glock and polymer in general pretty much forever.

The G25 and G28 chambered in .380 ACP do not meet U.S. importation requirements. We have been waiting for them to be manufactured in the US, but I am not aware of any plans to do so, at least in the immediate future.

BTW, I had a Glock 24C failure (kaboom) due to tolerances with a too tight-fitting aftermarket (Barsto) match barrel and weakened recoil spring. No harm done to me...stung the hand a little, blew extractor off, mag down, and jammed the action--with factory PMC. The pistol was used (read: previously tinkered with) and had some other none-OEM parts. Dropped the whole mess into a baggie, boxed it, sent it in to Glock, and they returned it 3 weeks later with a brand new frame.

Most failures are due to overpressure conditions (bad reloads/factory loads) or out-of-battery conditions, like mine.

Also had failures with a steel Colt Govt 1911 and a Remington 700.

Live and learn.

G36 Compact .45 ACP, packs nice, slim, no sharp edges.
28 ounces with a full mag and a hot chamber.
I recommend a tritium FRONT sight, easy enough to install yourself.

The glock failure I had was just a hand stinger too. In fact, the damage sounds very similar to your experience. The people I've met who have had these things blow up all report that bodily injury is avoided except for 1 eye/face injury from the slide flying off. I wonder if the design of the frame is such that the force is directed away from the grip?

The guy whose gun exploded in my hand got his sent back good as new in a short period as well.

As for live and learn, well, I learned to avoid glocks/polymer although I still enjoy shooting those owned by others.

In typical pistol overpressure events, most of the escaping gases take the path of least resistance, which is out the end of the barrel, from the breech upwards, and down the magazine well. I have not heard of Glocks throwing slides.

If I recall, Berettas had a problem throwing slides a while back. Maybe it was the Navy Seals hot-loaded ammo wearing or breaking the slide stop...something like that.

BTW, the slide assemblies on the G30 and G36 are interchangeable with each other and will function just fine. Thought someone might like to know that...
